Starting out in photography or looking to get to grips with more than the auto functions on your camera? Then these classes, based in the relaxed seaside town of Bexhill-on-Sea, may be for you.

Learn simple techniques to improve your photography, and increase your confidence in using your camera.

With over twenty years experience in photography, and a commercial background in product development and training, my classes are delivered in plain English in a friendly, relaxed environment.

Classes are a maximum of five places as standard, so you can be assured of attention.

The Photography Introduction classes are spread over three sessions, progressing from the fundamentals of photography through to more advanced techniques such as exposure compensation, usage of histograms and RAW files.

If you are a beginner, it is recommended that you attend the Part 1 class first. If you are more advanced, i.e. you understand the principles of f-stops and exposure values, or come from a film background and want to understand how this relates to the digital world, you could drop into the Part 2 or 3 classes.

If you are simply stuck for inspiration the Photo-group may be able to get those creative juices going.

My philosophy is simple: no matter what the camera is, the fundamentals of photography are universal. Once you have mastered the basics, you can apply them to whatever area of photography that you want to explore.
A Photography Introduction. PART 1

The class will cover a broad range of topics related to basic photography outlining common camera features and their use, with a mixture of theory and practical demonstrations. It is split into three separate sessions run on separate days. For those new to photography, it is recommended that the Part 1 class is attended first in which we go back to basics and introduce the exposure triangle, the f-stop/aperture and depth of field.

Each class is two hours, and limited to a maximum of 5 people.

All demonstrations will be undertaken using a reference camera linked to a projected display.

Reference materials used during the lesson will be provided by email.

Tuesdays: 10 -12pm

Price: £15.00 (per person/class)

A Photography Introduction. PART 2

Following on from the Part 1 class, we review the exposure triangle and priority modes, relating these to our cameras and consider the combination of drive modes and auto-focus, particularly looking at the auto-focus configurations available.
We also look at image sizing, histograms and white balance.

Attendees are encouraged to apply the basic principles learnt to their own cameras, (with support from myself). Camera manuals, (where available), will be available for reference.

Each class is two hours, and limited to a maximum of 5 people.

All demonstrations will be undertaken using a reference camera linked to a projected display.

A Photography Introduction. PART 3

In this final class we review the learning to date before moving on to looking at how the camera meters light, dynamic range and how to work round it.

We'll discuss the pro's and con's of the RAW and JPEG file formats, and also look in depth at the use of exposure compensation and picture styles to create an image that's closer to your vision.

Camera manuals, (where available), will be available for reference and time permitting, attendees will be able to undertake practical exercises with their cameras.

Each class is two hours, and limited to a maximum of 5 people.

Photo Group: developing your skills at your own pace in your own way.

The Photo-group is a forum that will enable you to develop at your own pace, to a level that suits you, in an environment of non-competiveness and encouragement. All levels of experience are welcome; the only thing needed is an open mind.

Running alongside the Photography classes, which concentrate on the basics, this is an informal group intending to develop the “seeing eye”, going beyond the technicalities of the camera. After all, the camera serves the creative intent, not the other way around.

The group is “magazine” style, with a mixture of (in no particular order or duration): demonstrations, technical tips and photography/art appreciation through looking at the work of the masters.

Attendees will be encouraged to share their work, only when and if they feel comfortable. It can be surprising how much can be learnt from someone else’s viewpoint.

Running twice a month, each class is 90 minutes, and will be limited to a maximum of 5 people.

Mondays: 1.30 -3pm
Classes run twice a month throughout the year.
Price: £8.00 (per person/class)

Photo-group is fully subscribed at the moment. If you would like be advised of when places are available, or would like to attend a taster session please send an email to:
